- Coastal Economic Development
Environmental Resource Economics
Students will explore natural resource use and environmental
quality analysis using economic theory and review empirical
research and relevant policy issues.
Government and Industry
This course examines relations between government and
business as well as public policies enforcing, supplementing,
or replacing competition in particular markets. Students
will review studies of selected industries and legal cases.
Regulation Development and Policy
Students will study theory and practice in regional development
and planning. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating regional
problems and the public policies designed to resolve them,
with a primary focus on the United States.
- Coastal Environmental Policy
Environmental & Resource Policy
This class explores the economic and policy aspects of
natural resource use and environmental quality issues.
Benefit Cost Analysis & Resource Management
Students will study the theoretical foundations and application
of benefit-cost analysis in project appraisal and in evaluation
of public policies regarding resource management and environmental
protection.
Environmental Evaluation & Assessment
This course covers concepts and methods of environmental
analysis in contemporary geography. Emphasis is placed
on on the ecological impact of human activities and on
the evaluation and assessment of existing and future environments.
Natural Resources Planning & Management
Concepts and methods of planning for the allocation, management
and utilization of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
are covered in this course as well as techniques and methods
of managerial decision making.
The Policy-making Process
Intended as an introduction to the study of policy analysis,
this course explores the description and prescriptive
models of policy-making. Also included is the closer examination
of several substantive areas of national policy in the
United States.
- Coastal Law and Regulation
Environmental Law
This class is designed as an overview of environmental
law including the common law practices of nuisance, negligence,
and trespass. Students will become acquainted with legal
research techniques. Emphasis will be on federal, state,
and municipal programs addressing clear air, clean water,
hazardous waste, inland wetlands, coastal zone management,
and prime agricultural farm land and aquifer protection.
Wetlands Biology & Conservation
Students will survey principal wetland habits of North
America and review the relationship of wildlife associations
to biological and physical features of wetlands. Emphasis
is placed on issues relating to wetlands conservation
and management.
Law & the Political Community
This class will explore leading schools of thought, fundamental
principles and concepts of law, the basic framework of
legal institutions, and judicial procedure. Particular
attention is devoted to the general features of American
law as it affects the citizen and primary emphasis is
placed on the function of law as a medium for attaining
a balance of social interests in a politically organized
society.
Public Administration
This course looks at the politics of public administration.
Topics include the role of administrative agencies and
officials in American national, state and local governments.
- Coastal Issues
Human Modification of Natural Environment
Students review a geographical and historical interpretation
of the changing relationships between culture and environment.
There is an emphasis on the modification of the biophysical
environment by preagricultural, agricultural and urban
societies in Europe, southwest Asia, and North America.
Environmental Planning & Management
The basic elements of conflict between human environments
and natural systems are considered, along with the methods
of analysis and resolution of problems caused by that
conflict. There is an emphasis on public policy related
to environmental issues.
Industrial Psychology
Students will explore the applications of psychology in
the workplace including measurement, personnel decisions,
performance appraisal, training, motivation, worker attitudes,
leadership, ergonomics and job design, workplace health
and safety.
